BIOCHEMISTRY SECTION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY
This is a section of the laboratory that deals with the metabolism of the constituents of the blood. The test carried out include hormonal tests (which includes FSH, TSH, PSA, e.t.c,), lipid profile, liver function test (LFT), electrolyte test (which include sodium (Na), Chloride (Cl), potassium( K)), urea, creatinine, glycerated haemoglobin (HBAIC),sugar/glucose test( i.e. fasting blood sugar (FBS) and random blood sugar (RBS). The laboratory equipment used include 9180 electrolyte analyser, Reflotron, Meditron junior, 902 machines, Centrifuge, Glycerated haemoglobin machine.
HEAMATOLOGY SECTION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY
Haematology is a section in the main laboratory which is concerned with the study of blood, the blood-forming organs and blood diseases. The test carried out in this section includes; the Full Blood Count (FBC), Malaria parasite test (MP) and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). This section comprises of various equipment which includes the Sysmex KX-21N, Quantitative Buffy Coat (QBC), Bucket centrifuge, Malaria parasite test mixer, Malaria parasite cassette, Fluorescence microscope and paralens. Whole blood is used in this section.
MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY SECTION
The medical microbiology deals with the study of pathogenic microorganisms (harmful organisms to the body) and microorganisms are organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eyes except viewed with microscope some could be harmful to the body and some beneficial. There are different classes of microorganisms mainly; Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi.
This section is divided into two sections;
The Immunology section
The Microbiology section
THE IMMUNOLOGY SECTION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY
Immunology simply deals with the protection from macromolecules or invading organisms and our responses to them. These invaders include viruses, bacteria, protozoa or even larger parasites. We develop immune responses against our own proteins and other molecules in autoimmunity and against our own aberrant cells in tumour immunity.
In the immunology section serology test are carried out which included; Retroviral screening tests(RVST), Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori), Pregnancy test(PT), Hepatitis B surface antigens(HBsAg), Hepatitis C virus, Veneral development research laboratory(VDRL) test, Widal test etc.
Serology test is usually dependent on Antigen-Antibody reaction. This reaction occurs when antigen combines with the antibody to give a reaction. If a patient is infected with a particular organism, the body forms antibody against the infecting agent (antigen) so when an antigen reacts with serum of an individual suspected to have a certain disease, there would be a reaction as long as the antibody is specific for that specific antigen.
